Beach Safety for Dogs

Posted by

Summer is here and what better way to enjoy it than a beach day with your dogs!  There is much fun to be had, but first here are a few tips to help you prepare and play safe!

1.  Make sure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and heartworm/flea medication.  Take any regular medications on vacation with you and have a local vet or emergency phone number handy.

2.  Follow the local beach rules regarding dogs, and be aware of daily conditions like riptides or jellyfish.

3.  Have plenty of fresh, cool water available for your dog!  They will want to drink seawater, but try to keep it to a minimum as the salt can make them sick.

4.  Be aware of the heat - it can affect your dog faster than you.  Take shade and water breaks often.

5.  Watch out for too much strenuous activity - even if your dog is in good shape, running in sand and swimming can be very tiring.

6.  Use sunblock on your dog's nose and exposed skin (preferably dog-friendly, zinc-free sunblock).  Short-haired and light-colored dogs can be especially susceptible to the sun.

7.  Keep an eye on your dog's paws - hot sand, sharp shells, or broken glass can harm the pads of their feet.

8.  Finally, after a fun day of play, make sure to rinse the sand and salt water off your dog with fresh water.  Get ready for a nice long dog nap!
